Getunvarnished Com Controversy Behind The Beta

Online communities have been emerging for well over a decade. Over the course of time they’ve grown in popularity, evolved and have become niche oriented. Community based websites have become firmly immersed in society and from the looks of things, this trend is going to continue to grow. With the tremendous success of Internet socialization it is no wonder so many different websites are cropping up. Any kind of information an Internet user wants they can usually find. Today web surfers can search and locate an online community for most anything from cars to parenting to reviewing businesses and everything in between. Now web users can review other people in a community based setting. This latest attention grabber is a new site called Unvarnished. The site was launched as a private beta version on March 31, 2010. Users can currently sign up using their Facebook accounts, but at the time of this release the content inside the site is not visible to everyone and reviews are by invitation only. Unvarnished touts themselves as “Truth in Reputation”. Their philosophy is websites such as LinkedIn.com promote the positive and this kind of approach isn’t realistic in the real world because often the frankness employers look for is absent. One of the objectives of Unvarnished is to develop a community that is open, frank and honest; a site potential employers or other professionals can use to garner truthful information about people they are looking to learn more about. In theory the Unvarnished philosophy perhaps sounds great, however is it really the real world? In the real world people tend to dwell on the negative and put less emphasis on the positive. All one has to do is look at the front page of any newspaper to see what kinds of stories nab attention, and chances are the highlights are negative in nature. The way the site is currently structured is users can review other people and post their reviews. The reviews are anonymous, so while users have to log in and register in order to leave comments, the comments community members leave on profiles are unidentified. Unvarnished connects membership to Facebook accounts to help detect legitimate vs. fake users, however the question begs asking what could stop a person with a vendetta from creating a fake Facebook account in order to gain access? Right now the site is invitation only, but over time this will likely change once the site is fully released and out of beta.
