Netflix has dropped the trailer for Jacques Audiard’s highly anticipated musical drama Emilia Perez, which made waves at Cannes this year. With Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez leading the cast, the film snagged both the jury prize and best actress awards for Saldaña, Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz. Positioned as a major Oscar contender this fall, Emilia Perez is set to be one of Netflix’s standout releases.
Netflix’s official synopsis for Emilia Perez reveals an intriguing journey centered on four remarkable women in Mexico, each in pursuit of happiness. The story follows Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón), a powerful cartel leader, who enlists the help of Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a frustrated lawyer, to fake her death so she can live authentically as her true self and undergo gender reassignment surgery. The film also features Edgar Ramírez in the supporting cast.

After its buzzworthy Cannes premiere, Netflix secured Emilia Perez, with Variety film critic Peter Debruge praising the film in his review. He described it as an “exhilarating Spanish-language (half-sung) portrait of a former cartel boss’s life-changing transformation.”

Peter Debruge noted that Jacques Audiard’s visually striking and provocative film Emilia Pérez breaks from the conventional norms often upheld by LGBT advocates. The movie, featuring Zoe Saldaña as a lawyer assisting in Manitas’s transition and Selena Gomez as the mother of their children, is praised for its raw and powerful portrayal of a character who defies multiple stereotypes.
